Erik Holtved's Polar Eskimo Texts Revised and Re-translated into Danish and English
The stories in this volume reflect the rich cultural backdrop of the Inughuit world. They were recorded in the 1930s and 40s by archaeologist and ethnologist Erik Holtved. This publication features 63 of them, presented in the Inuktun (Thule) dialect and accompanied by Danish and English translations. Holtved's recordings have been re-transcribed for accuracy. The Inuktun dialect has never been standardized and has undergone significant changes following the immigration of Inuit from North America in the 1860s and strong influence from West Greenlandic after World War II. Therefore, a special phonemic orthography has been developed and applied for this purpose, balancing the phonology of historical and modern Inuktun in the transcription.
