This book presents the first critical edition of Gregory of Nazianzus’ carm. II,1,50 On the illness , one of the so-called Carmina de seipso written by one of the most influential Church Fathers and Christian authors of the fourth century. The book investigates the transmission of carm. II,1,50, within the complex manuscript tradition of Gregory’s Carmina . The introduction provides a thorough examination of the poem’s composition, genre, and literary features. It also offers a novel examination of the distinctive characteristics of the elegiac distich in Christian poetry. An extensive commentary compares carm. II,1,50 with various parallels from Gregory’s own poetry and from a broader literary tradition, encompassing both pagan and Christian sources. Key intertextual references are incorporated into the commentary and presented in an apparatus fontium . Furthermore, this volume includes two previously unedited Byzantine paraphrases, shedding light on the long-lasting appreciation for this work throughout the Byzantine millennium.
