L`idée, encore tenace, suivant laquelle le XVIIIe siècle serait resté étranger à l`histoire est, comme le constatait déjà Ernst Cassirer, " sans aucun fondement historique ". De fait, la question de l`histoire investit l`ensemble de la réflexion des Lumières car elle est désormais perçue comme un vecteur essentiel des transformations de la nature, des sociétés et des individus, que la philosophie se donne pour mission de comprendre. Le présent recueil d`articles, écrits par des spécialistes venant d`horizons disciplinaires et nationaux divers (Canada, États-Unis, Finlande, France, Grande-Bretagne, Japon, Pays- Bas), se propose d`aborder l`imaginaire historique foisonnant des Lumières autour de trois grands axes : réinventer l`antiquité, imaginer de nouveaux mondes et penser les révolutions.The idea that the 18th century remained a stranger to history is itself, as Ernst Cassirer observed, "an idea with no historical foundation." In fact, a preoccupation with history traverses Enlightenment thought as a whole, for it is perceived as a vector par excellence of the transformations in nature, society and individuals that philosophers set out to understand. The present collection of articles, written by specialists from different disciplines and national contexts (Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain, Holland, Japan, USA), studies the rich historical imagery of the Enlightenment as it relates to three major areas : Reinventing Antiquity, Imagining new worlds, and Thinking about revolution.
