La relation constante avec Dieu, « comme avec un ami », est au coeur même de tout dialogue. Et la vie humaine n'est possible que dans le dialogue sinon elle se dissout dans la violence. Qu'il s'agisse d'une communauté religieuse, où les « frères » doivent pouvoir se parler, quelles que soient les différences, voire les antagonismes, qui les séparent ou qu'il s'agisse simplement des communautés humaines les plus éloignées de l'idéal religieux. Et pour que le dialogue puisse s'établir, pour que l'autre soit accepté dans sa différence, quelle peut être la meilleure référence que cet Autre, qui a voulu se faire Parole ? Le frère Timothy sait en parler sans jamais s'embarrasser du langage convenu de la bienséance ecclésiastique.--Brother Timothy Radcliffe, the 85th master of the Ordre des frères prêcheurs (Dominicans)and the youngest since Cajetan « elected at the age of forty in 1508 », is an extraordinary personality. He is animated by a deep conviction: that the constant relation with God, « as with a friend», is at the very heart of all dialogue. And human life is not possible except within dialogue without which it dissolves into violence. Whether it be question of a religious community, where « brothers» must be permitted to speak to each other - whatever differences or even antagonism may divide them - or of an ordinary human community, as far as possible from the religious ideal dialogue must be established, so that the Other may be accepted with his or her difference. What better reference than the Other, who has the will to appear in Word? Brother Timothy knows how to speak with warmth, referring to his daily experience (a film, viewing an advertisement, a journey), addressing the heart and the mind. Never burdened by the conventional language of ecclesiastic correction, he seems always to be conscious of his Order's motto, which is Truth.
