Robert Bouchet commence sa carrière comme peintre. Entre?1935 et?1937, il découvre la guitare et s’intéresse à sa construction en fréquentant l’atelier du luthier espagnol Gómez Ramírez.En 1946, ayant perdu la guitare qu’il avait pendant la guerre, il décide d’en construire une. Cette première réalisation rencontre un grand succès auprès des guitaristes et il reçoit ses premières commandes. Vers 1957, il innove en ajoutant une «?barre d’âme?» à ses guitares et obtient un son très équilibré et personnel. Sa réputation grandit et Ida Presti, Alexandre Lagoya et Julian Bream, entre autres, adoptent ses instruments. Il aura construit 154 guitares, très recherchées aujourd’hui, et son travail a eu une forte influence sur de nombreux luthiers.
