En 2006, Luc, hydrologue français, sollicité par un ami, Hakim, apporte ses compétences professionnelles à un village du Sud marocain. Dans un souk, il photographie un vieil homme impressionnant. Plus tard, alors qu'il lui offre le cliché, le vieillard lui fait part de son angoisse : il est sans nouvelle de son petit-fils, Eylan. Luc, lui-même tourmenté et disposant de quelques semaines avant sa visite du chantier, se met spontanément en quête du jeune homme avec un seul indice : l'adresse de sa mère. Un chauffeur autochtone le conduira à la limite du désert : rencontres, échanges, accueils imprévus, lieux insolites... Face à la pérennité de certaines traditions, Luc atteindra-t-il son objectif ?
