Afin de rentrer chez eux, les deux compères sans le sou décident de participer à "l'American Transcontinental Race", une course acharnée reliant la côte ouest à la côte est des États-Unis. À bord d'une voiture à vapeur qu'ils ont construite, ils devront traverser des contrées sauvages, se battre contre des rivaux fous à lier, tout en se protégeant de l'environnement hostile et des hors-la-loi... Les deux amis pourront-ils gagner cette course impitoyable et obtenir la récompense afin de rentrer au bercail ?
