Les anciens marais salants ont été transformés en claires où pousse la fameuse huître, tandis que l'estran est sillonné de bateaux ostréicoles. D'autres bateaux constituent la flottille de La Cotinière, petit village agricole qui évolue vers un important port de pêche dans le der¬nier tiers du XIXe siècle. Richesse naturelle, mais aussi richesse historique constituent ce « petit continent».
