D'après la légende officielle de l'église, Saint Expédit était un officier romain. Chef de la douzième légion romaine, du nom Fulminante, qui avait ses quartiers dans la ville de Mélitène. En l'an 303 du calendrier romain, il se convertit à la religion chrétienne, et Dioclétien, empereur de Byzance le fait exécuter. Saint-Expédit est représenté en jeune soldat romain debout ayant à la main gauche la palme du martyre; dans l'autre main il présente une croix où est inscrite « Hodie » (aujourd'hui). Sous son pied droit il retient un corbeau qui dit «cras» (demain).
