Cette œuvre succincte sur la vie du Mahasiddha indien Tilopa a été composée au XIème siècle par le grand traducteur tibétain Marpa Tcheukyi Lodreu (1012-1097) à l'intention de son fils Darma Dodé. C'est la plus ancienne biographie de Tilopa à notre connaissance. Elle s'inscrit dans une collection de textes de la tradition Marpa Kagyu : la Lignée Transmise de Bouche à Oreille de Cakrasamvara et Dakini.Le genre auquel il appartient est un "récit de vie de parfaite libération" (tib. Nam Tar) ou hagiographie de celui qui fut le maître de Naropa.
