Il est, en définitive, l'un des premiers textes (sinon le premier) d'éthologie, décrivant les comportements instinctuel et appris, des espèces animales.La première édition de ce livre date de l'année 2009, "l'année Darwin". Aujourd'hui épuisé, ce "texte essentiel" est réédité agrémenté de nombreuses illustrations.
