Dans un petit monastère bouddhique de la région Nord du Japon s'élève la statue d'une jeune Américano-Irlandaise, qui y vécut au début des années 1980. Pendant les trois ans de sa formation zen à Iwate et à Tokyo, on la connut sous le nom de Maura-san, ou sous son nom monastique, Soshi-san. En 1982, Maura reçut la transmission de son roshi (maître). Six mois plus tard, elle disparaissait dans un accident d'autocar. Les lettres et le journal de Maura O'Halloran constituent un document rare sur la formation d'un Occidental dans un temple japonais de l'école zen Soto.
