Cultural Exchanges Across the Cataracts » offre une série d’études portant sur l’histoire ancienne et moderne de la Nubie en se concentrant sur trois spécificités : son administration et son économie, la manière dont les contacts interculturels se sont développés au fil du temps et les interconnexions observables dans les croyances religieuses au sein de ce territoire. La Nubie, carrefour naturel entre le Moyen-Orient et l’Afrique, est un territoire idéal pour explorer ces différents aspects, en incluant les échanges avec les régions voisines. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, ce volume combine l’archéologie et l’égyptologie, ainsi que les études médiévales et arabes, pour analyser les changements régionaux, les interactions culturelles et les développements sociaux dans la région de Nubie. Afin d’observer ces dynamiques au fil du temps, ce volume propose une analyse diachronique sur la longue durée, de l’Antiquité jusqu’aux phases historiques contemporaines.“Gateway to Africa. Cultural Exchanges Across the Cataracts” examines a series of case studies focusing on three specific aspects of the Ancient and Modern Nubian history: its administration and economy, how cross-cultural contacts developed through time, and how interconnections within religious believes entangled in the complexity of this region. Additionally, Nubia, a natural crossroad between the Middle East and Africa, is an ideal territory to explore how and to what extent these dynamics influenced—and were influenced by—its neighbouring regions. To detect how these socio-economic, political, cultural, and religious dynamics occurred, changed, and evolved through time, this volume proposes a diachronic analysis in the longue durée: from Antiquity until more modern and contemporaneous historical phases. This volume, therefore, combines Archaeology, Egyptology as well as Medieval and Arabic Studies as a proxy to analyse regional changes, cultural dynamics, and social developments in the Nubian region through time.
