J. F. Herbart (1776 -1841) est un philosophe aujourd'hui méconnu en France, mais son oeuvre a profondément marqué l'Allemagne et l'Empire austrohongrois au XIXe siècle. Successeur de Kant à Königsberg, élève de Fichte, contemporain de Hegel, il rompt cependant avec l'idéalisme absolu de son temps pour réévaluer le kantisme selon un « réalisme rigoureux». Il connaîtra dans l'espace autrichien du XIXe siècle un retentissement tel que sa philosophie sera considérée comme « officielle ». Nous la présentons ici en insistant sur sa postérité : l'école herbartienne, féconde et diversifiée, habitera le paysage intellectuel jusqu'au début du XXe siècle.
