En 1797, parut un ouvrage qui allait secouer l'Europe. Son auteur John Robison était un franc-maçon de haut grade qui avait été approché par Adam Weishaupt afin de participer à une opération de grande envergure visant à faire tomber les gouvernements anglais et français pour "le bien des peuples" en infiltrant les loges maçonniques. Robison, refusa sa participation mais réussit néanmoins à susciter suffisamment la confiance de Weishaupt pour avoir accès aux informations sur ce complot. Robison tenta en vain de prévenir les gouvernements concernés, mais personne ne le crut. La révolution américaine éclata, suivie en 1789 de la révolution française. Toute la théorie du NOM trouve ses racines dans ce livre de Robison.
