Le 11 juillet 1891, E. Moselly obtient sa Licence es lettres à l'Université de Nancy. Le 10 novembre, il part au Service Militaire, affecté au 6ème Bataillon d'Artillerie de forteresse, au fort de Lucey (Camp retranché de Toul). En juin-juillet 1892, il fera un séjour au camp de Châlons (Mourmelon). Libéré de ses obligations militaires le 18 septembre 1892, et après quelques semaines passées à Chaudeney-sur-Moselle, il arrive, boursier d'agrégation, à Lyon le 2 novembre, pour préparer l'agrégation de Lettres classiques. Avec Les Étudiants, E. Moselly va raconter, de manière à peine romancée, ses années d'études à Lyon.
