The first arcades appeared in Paris at the very end of the 18th century and thrived for a few decades. Convenient shortcuts between two busy streets, these glass corridors lined with tempting stores offered strollers the privilege of wandering through luxurious settings all while being sheltered from the elements. However, Haussmann's great renovation of Paris put an end to these meccas of commerce and urban sociability. Many of the arcades disappeared completely, but enough remain for today's stroller to experience the ineffable pleasure of escaping both the city and the passage of time. Edition bilingue FR-GB
