Comme dans son premier récit autobiographique, "Lumière bleue", où il relatait ses années d'exil aux États-Unis, l'auteur parvient à mêler intimement et indissociablement toutes les facettes de sa quête personnelle, à la fois intellectuelle, poétique, philosophique, politique et spirituelle. C'est ce qui dote son oeuvre d'une tonalité à nulle autre pareille dans la littérature arabe contemporaine.
