En 1947, Judith Malina et Julian Beck fondent le Living Theatre pour frayer le chemin du drame poétique à New-York. En 1965, le Living Theatre s'exile volontairement en Europe. Il est le laboratoire itinérant d'une communauté d'artistes. A partir des années 70, la chape se referme et on n'entend plus parler du Living theatre. C'est qu'il est parti par les souterrains : ceux de l'humanité des chômeurs, des pacifistes, des militants en grève, ceux dont l'existence pourrait être une question du théâtre. Judith Malina et Hanon Reznikov dirigent actuellement la compagnie du Living Theatre
