Cicéron (106-43) défend Sextus Roscius, un citoyen d'Amérie accusé de parricide par trois hommes, dont un affranchi, Chrysogonus, favori de Sylla (138-78 av. J.-C.). L'atmosphère est encore lourde du souvenir des proscriptions qui ont ensanglanté Rome. Or l'avocat, avec brio, attaque courageusement les accusateurs : ils cherchent à éliminer son client pour s'emparer de ses biens en toute illégalité. L'audace de l'orateur est récompensée puisqu'il sauve Sextus Roscius d'un horrible châtiment. Mais était-ce là son seul objectif ? Et si ce discours offrait à Cicéron l’occasion d'inaugurer avec éclat son ambitieuse carrière politique ?
