[...] Il occupe une place comparable à celles de Heinz Kohut aux Etats-Unis, Wilfred Bion en Grande-Bretagne, ou Marie Langer en Argentine. » Margarete Mitscherlich, sa troisième femme et principale collaboratrice, avait été formée à l'analyse par Michael Balint. Leur livre fit scandale lors de sa parution en Allemagne, en 1967 : à travers l'exposé des troubles psychosomatiques de certains patients, Alexander et Margarete Mitscherlich y analysaient en effet le refoulement collectif des souvenirs du IIIe Reich en Allemagne. Une réflexion sur la mémoire et l'oubli qui n'a rien perdu de son actualité.
