Médiéviste de formation, Jean Chélini a été l'élève puis l'assistant de Georges Duby à la faculté de lettres d'Aix-en-Provence. Il a ensuite enseigné l'histoire du Moyen Âge à Montpellier, mais il n'a jamais pu se déprendre de son intérêt pour l'histoire religieuse immédiate, en particulier pour celle de la papauté. C'est ainsi qu'il a été envoyé comme correspondant de presse à Rome pour suivre les travaux du concile Vatican II et qu'il s'est retrouvé régulièrement dans la Ville éternelle pour couvrir les grands événements du Saint-Siège. Il est devenu ainsi un familier de la Rome pontificale. Au bout de toutes ces années, presque un demi-siècle, traversant les pontificats de Jean XXIII, de Paul VI, de Jean-Paul II et aujourd'hui de Benoît XVI, ces " Chroniques romaines ", parues dans la presse quotidienne ou périodique, écrites d'une plume légère et rassemblées en un même ouvrage, offrent au lecteur un panorama circonstancié, parfois anecdotique, mais souvent révélateur des événements et des hommes du microcosme romain.
