Dans ce livre, précis, remarquablement documenté et honnête, Wilhelm De Vries, à l'époque professeur à l'Institut pontifical oriental à Rome, montre que l'histoire des Églises d'Orient et d'Occident a été celle d'un affrontement entre deux conceptions divergentes des structures ecclésiales. Cet ouvrage a représenté une contribution majeure dans le dialogue entre l'Église catholique et les Églises orthodoxes.
