LE MONOTHÉISME BIBLIQUE

Les fouilles archéologiques effectuées ces dernières décennies en Palestine ont provoqué un regain d'intérêt pour le monothéisme tel qu'il est exprimé dans la Bible. En effet, la découverte d'un grand nombre d'objets sacrés a ébranlé l'hypothèse qui a longtemps fait l'unanimité : la société d'Israël aurait adopté le monothéisme yahviste au plus tard au moment de l'Exode. Dans le débat plus récent, nul ne peut ignorer la question de la violence que l'exclusivisme monothéiste est supposé engendrer. Il était donc urgent de reprendre à frais nouveaux la question du monothéisme, de ses enjeux et de ses implications. Des spécialistes — en sciences bibliques, en histoire des religions et en sciences humaines — apportent ici leur contribution. Comment a-t-on cherché à exprimer l'unicité et l'incomparabilité du Dieu des juifs et des chrétiens ? Comment concevoir la spécificité du Dieu unique, tout en mentionnant d'autres dieux et êtres célestes ? Comment le monothéisme juif et chrétien a-t-il reçu la façon dont les érudits et les philosophes issus du monde « païen » évoquaient le Dieu un ? Tout cela est peu connu et peu étudié. On trouvera ici une étude approfondie des textes du judaïsme, du christianisme naissant et de la littérature du monde gréco-romain. Cet apport scientifique de qualité, sur une question qui prend aujourd'hui de l'importance, contribuera certainement au dialogue actuel et au respect réciproque, et espère ainsi participer à l'apaisement de nos sociétés.--Over the last few decades, archeological excavation in Palestine has increased interest in monotheism as represented in the Bible. Indeed, the discovery of a large number of sacred objects has shaken a hypothesis that was universally accepted: that Israel adopted Yahwist monotheism at the time of the Exodus at the very latest. In more recent debate, no one can ignore the question of the violence supposedly engendered by monotheistic exclusivism. Hence it was vital to take a fresh look at monotheism, its challenges and its implications. Specialists in biblical science, the history of religions and the humanities have also made contributions. How was the unicity and the incomparability of the Jewish and Christian God expressed? How can the specificity of one God be conceived, while mentioning other gods and heavenly beings? How did Jewish and Christian monotheism receive the way in which learned men and philosophers from the ‘pagan' world evoked a unique God? All of these questions have been rarely investigated or answered. In this book, the reader will find an in-depth study of texts from Judaism, early Christianity and literature from the Greco-Roman world. This excellent scientific contribution, on a subject that is gaining in importance today, will undoubtedly contribute to today's dialogue, the creation of mutual respect and hopefully, more peaceful societies.
