Premier Français champion olympique du Marathon
Né en Algérie française, Louafi Bouguera (1903-1959) fut, lors des JO d’Amsterdam (1928), le premier Français champion olympique du Marathon. Manoeuvre chez Renault, déménageant d’Alger à Marseille puis à Paris, Bouguera reste un exemple d’athlète amateur. Suite à son exploit sportif, il partit aux États-Unis pour se produire six mois durant dans des courses diverses, le tout grâce à son impresario François Quilgars (1889-1948) et au promoteur Tex Rickard (1870-1929). Revenu riche des États-Unis, Bouguera perdit tout, sauf sa dignité et l’affection des siens qui l’hébergèrent quand la disette fut venue. Mort dans des conditions non élucidées, Bouguera n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une biographie. 94 ans après son exploit sportif, il était temps de combler ce manque.
